Michele Nielsen, DPTDr. Michele Nielsen is a native of Virginia Beach and graduate of First Colonial High School. She received her BS in exercise science in 2000 and went on to receive her doctoral degree in 2006 both from Old Dominion University. Following graduation she continued her education through coursework at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries to develop a physical therapy program geared toward the special needs of dancers. Dance has always been Michele’s first love and here she has been able to combine her passion for orthopedics and dance into this program. Michele studied all genres of dance locally at Denise Wall’s Dance Energy. Last year she began her journey as the resident physical therapist for Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound, a professional touring dance company.

Michele has worked in multiple physical therapy settings including out-patient orthopedics, out-patient pediatric orthopedics/sports medicine, and home health which has given her experience treating patients with a wide variety of diagnoses and health needs. She has furthered her post-graduate education to specialize in women’s health and wellness as well.

Additionally, Michele has lectured at a number of professional conferences and is an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University’s School of Physical Therapy. Most recently she developed a dance program for seniors with dementia and spoke at a continuing education conference on the advocacy of the program and how it can be implemented. In her free time, Michele enjoys spending time with her two children, Raegan and Garrett.
